TWO new high-dependency beds have been opened up at the Alexandra Hospital as part of a £700,000 improvement programme.

And the number of HDU beds, which are a step down from intensive therapy beds, will increase to four by the end of the year.

The move will mean the hospital's six ITU beds are freed up faster and are only used for the most critically ill patients.

Improvements will also see the coronary care unit relocated to be nearer the accident and emergency department.

Plans to extend the hospital's pathology department at the hospital were set to be given the go ahead last night.

Up to £400,000 has been earmarked for modernising the department, which came under strong criticism from Redditch and Bromsgrove Community Health Council.

A seminar room and more office accommodation are to be created and laboratory space is to be increased.
