DEAR EDITOR - Some of the "Harry Potter" magic has been at work over the Christmas period.

It would seem that a transformation has taken place at Wychavon District Council.

Councillor Meikle and his colleagues would have you believe that they are charging to the rescue of Droitwich clutching a £20m "Regeneration of Droitwich" rescue package.

They have even wheeled out Peter Luff MP to try and convince everyone that this is an opportunity that Droitwich cannot afford to miss.

The truth is that nothing has changed and Wychavon District Council is more desperate than ever to convince everyone that projects such as the Lido redevelopment and the Waitrose store on the Saltway car park should proceed.

Indeed, there are thinly disguised threats as to what will happen if these projects do not go ahead.

The proposed Lido project is with a company with negative assets and no track record whatsoever in building similar facilities. The Waitrose store is the wrong design in a totally inappropriate location and it is questionable whether Waitrose is the right retailer for the needs of Droitwich.

In the regeneration plan, much is made of the Droitwich heritage factor, but certain projects that are being enthusiastically promoted will effectively destroy that heritage forever.

There is a desperate need for investment in the town no one denies that, but it needs to be the right investment in projects that will be successful and go on to sustain the town in the future.

Councillor Meikle refers to the silent majority in Droitwich but so far he has steadfastly refused public debate on any new development strategy for the town.

If this council is genuinely concerned for the future of the town, then come and talk to the people of Droitwich and ask the silent majority what they would like for the future.
