The home side gave Bromsgrove the slope and wind advantage in the first half and the visiting pack soon demonstrated a distinct weight and technique advantage in the scrum.

The first real chance of the game fell to fly half Matt Birch on five minutes but he saw his penalty goal fall the wrong side of the posts.

Richard Morrisey scored the first unconverted try and seconds later a splendid pick up by prop Steve Phillips led to Lee Wainwright's angled run for a converted try.

Before long Bromsgrove took further advantage of a ragged-looking Shrewsbury side with Dean Ball breaking away for a short unopposed solo converted try to give the visitors a 22-point lead at the turnaround.

Birch started the second half with another penalty goal before coach David Stout replaced prop Mark Cornelius with Mark Tuffnell and centre James Udy with Adrian Parsons.

Shrewsbury then had a player dismissed for dangerous play following a scrum near the Bromsgrove posts.

In the 74th minute and following Andy Bridge's replacement by his brother David, Birch fooled the hosts with two dummy passes to run in another converted try.

The home side then scored a consolation try through Andy Lewis as the Bromsgrove defence was exposed.

But the visitors' response was immediate when Parsons capitalised on good handling and ran from the half way line with an explosion of pace for a converted try before Colin Morley completed the scoring.

The club's other results were: Seconds 22 Shrewsbury 0; Thirds 17 Shrewsbury 0; Fourths lost 59-0 to Lichfield Veterans; Colts beat Nuneaton 15-12.
