PEOPLE from all walks of life are being urged to enroll on a special course to help them understand gifted children.

The postgraduate course, which is being run at University College Worcester, has so far taught teachers and a few parents.

Now its director, who is concerned the general public is not aware of the course, is urging people from all areas and professions to enroll.

The course, called Gifted and Talented Children, was started by Professor Tony Crocker two years ago.

"A majority of the people who have come on the course have been teachers, and some have been parents with gifted children," said Prof Crocker, course director.

"But the general public aren't hearing about it.

"Advertising has been a problem and we'd like to see people from all walks of life join the course."

Prof Crocker said the course was unusual because it was the only one in Herefordshire and Worcestershire that led to qualifications at university level by learning about gifted children.

"You do get one day courses in Worcester to do with gifted children, and little introduction courses," he said.

"Also Worcester Education Community has a member of staff responsible for gifted education.

"But there are no courses like this one in Worcestershire and Herefordshire."

Prof Crocker said the ages of the students who had attended the course ranged from 30 to 55, but he would be happy to have younger people on the course.

The course, which is recognised by the DFES and run by the National Association for Gifted Children in collaboration with UCW, costs £200 a module for people already teaching, and £250 for a non-teacher per subject.

Pupils are given £50 a year from the fees to spend on books.

"The reports from people on the course have been positive and the course has made them more aware of gifted children," said Prof Crocker, who has an MA in education, an MA in psychology and a doctorate in education.

Further details and applications for the course should be obtained from Prof Crocker at NAGC Head Office, Elder House, Milton Keynes, MK9 1LR.
