A JILTED husband jumped in his car to catch his wife with another man, after seeing the New Year in with double vodkas.

Frantic Gary Wardle almost made the seven-mile journey from Lower Moor to Evesham at 3am on Tuesday, January 1, but crashed into a parked car.

John Barnett, prosecuting at Droitwich Magistrates Court, said the 36-year-old car dismantler was arrested after a police officer smelled alcohol on his breath.

"A patrol car was called to St Phillips Drive where a blue Audi had suffered extensive damage to its rear," he said.

"He asked the driver of a Fiat Brava if he had hit the Audi and he said, 'yes, it was icy'.

"As he spoke, the officer smelled alcohol on his breath."

Tests revealed Wardle was more than twice the drink-drive limit with 82mcgs of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

Jo Kieran, defending, said the father-of-three, of Oaktree Close, Evesham - who admitted driving with excess alcohol - made the journey after hearing his wife was with another man.

"They separated two weeks before Christmas but, up until then, he had no inkling that his wife no longer wanted to live with him," he said.

"On New Year's Eve, he dropped his car off at his cousin's house in Lower Moor and the pair were driven to The Chequers pub in Fladbury.

"He drank four double vodkas and coke during the evening and at 3am, walked two-and-a-half miles back to his cousin's house."

Mr Kieran said he then had a call from a friend who said he knew his wife was with another man.

"He decided to make an impromptu visit to Evesham.

"On the way, he hit black ice and went into the back of a parked vehicle.

"The owner came out and Wardle gave his details willingly."

Magistrates disqualified him for 20 months. He was fined £75 with £25 costs.
