H RAY is wrong in assuming that the number of people attending public demonstrations is an indicator of public opinion in general (You Say, January 5).

Useful as demonstrations are in generating publicity, they are not to everyone's liking and regardless of how strongly the general public feels about a particular issue - whether it be animal abuse, human abuse or abuse of the environment - only a minority of the millions of people in this country ever take to the streets to voice their concerns.

Public support takes many forms and cannot be gauged by how many people do or do not take part in demonstrations.
