THE roofs of four unused garages in Sherrard's Green that had become a target for vandals collapsed onto an abandoned car on Monday.

Although nobody was injured in the incident, resident Eric Williams, of nearby Pound Bank Road, claims he had spent all day on Sunday phoning police to warn them that children had been banging concrete struts with a lump hammer and walking along the roofs of the Elgar Housing Association-owned garages.

Previously he has complained that gates which open into his back garden have been vandalised beyond repair, bottles are constantly broken in the lane and stolen cars are abandoned there.

Mr Williams said: "Malvern is a nice place to live in if you live in the centre of town. It's not nice down here but I own my property and I am not moving for anybody.

"Two ladies who live behind the collapsed garages go through hell," he said. "I have reported it time and time again but nobody is listening in Malvern. It's dangerous."

He said he rang police on Sunday to advise them that children were dismantling an abandoned Metro.

It had then been pushed into the garages which later collapsed.

"I have had five cars recovered from here and returned to their owners," Mr Williams said. "A lot of cars get stolen and are dumped here."

West Mercia Police acknowledged Mr Williams complaints and said they had passed the matter on to Elgar Housing Assoc-iation, which owns the land.

Julia Daker, spokesman for Elgar's parent company the Partnership Housing Group, said yesterday that the collapsed roofs had been cleared and sub-contractors would remove all the garages and clear the whole area by February.

Building a play area is among options being considered by Partnership Housing for the area's future use.
