NOW 2002 has arrived riders will be looking to fill their new calendars with a whole host of events and competitions, both amateur and professional.

One not to be missed is an equine event which is being held at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire on March 2.

The day offers a packed programme of demonstrations and clinics with celebrity riders and trainers, practical horse care talks, trade and stand shopping and a spectacular dance horses finale to highlight the grace and beauty of horses performing to music.

Among those passing on the secrets of their success will be Stow-on-the-Wold-based dressage star Peter Storr, who is the current British National Dressage Champion. Olympic eventer Karen Dixon, international show jumper Billy Twomey and lading lady four-in-hand driver Karen Bassett, with popular horse behaviourist Richard Maxwell will also be appearing.

This year's grand finale, entitled 'Dancing with Horses,' will feature Peter Storr performing dressage to music, and Karen Bassett driving her carriage horses to music.

Also the finalists from the British Riding Club's/SEIB Quadrille will be showing off their winning display.

Visitors will be urged to support the BHS Rescue Centre by taking along and donating any unwanted items of tack and equipment. There will also be a chance to explore the college's state of the art equine therapy centre.

There are also opportunities for local riders to get involved, either by taking part in a clinic and benefiting from instruction from top riders or bringing along their horses to have a go at the fast-growing new sport of BHS TREC.

Horse magazine editor Jaki Bell said: "This is the fifth year we have held a one-day equine event and we're delighted we can bring such a packed day of equestrian information and entertainment to Gloucestershire.

"This is a real opportunity for horse enthusiasts to see top riders and trainers close at hand and to learn from the best."

Tickets for the event are £14.50 for adults, £9.50 for students under 16, with children under five going free. For tickets ring 01403 256 255.
