A FATHER'S death has spurred his son to take time off as a company director and trek across the Sahara desert to support a cancer charity.

Neale White, of Hop Hole Lane, Bewdley, is travelling to Morocco in March to undertake the six-day, 100 kilometre sponsored walk in gruelling conditions in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief.

"When I lost my father in November - to something totally separate from cancer - I was given a wake-up call," explained Mr White.

He added: "Life's not all about money and possessions, it's about people. I wanted to put something back in to the community and this is for a good cause. I'm doing it in memory of my father."

The boss of Bewdley's Ghia car dealership must raise at least £2,000 in sponsorship but since he started asking friends and clients for money on December 20 he has collected over half.

"In two days I got around £1,300 from people I know and business contacts," he said. "All the garages I deal with have thrown in £100 and I've written a letter to my son's school, Winterfold in Chaddesley Corbett, and they've sent out sponsorship forms to all parents."

He added: "In the New Year I'll start fund-raising again. The more I get the better."

Mr White, 40, is preparing for the adventure - which will take in dunes, plateaux and oases under the shadow of the Atlas Mountains - by keeping up his usual fitness routine.

"I used to be a semi-professional footballer and I still play Sunday football," he said. "I use the gym in Stourport three or four times a week, and the heat won't be a problem because I'm a bit of a sun worshipper."

"My wife Susan has been very supportive and she gets to do without me for nine days!"
