YOUR grovelling editorial on Wednesday, December 12, about Worcester City FC's new stadium failed - as usual - to address the real issue.

What you uncritically describe as an "enabling project" by B&Q is quite simply a bribe by the company to circumvent planning laws. They have promised to fund the new stadium if the city council promises to fiddle the next Local Plan and designate a greenfield site for retail development.

OK, that gets the city a nice new football stadium - but let us not pretend that it is ethical, moral or more than only just legal.

Powerful public companies have shown that they are able to bend the planning laws to suit themselves, whereas ordinary people cannot.

Dressing these decisions up a "enabling" or "planning gain" does nothing to hide the fact that the town and country planning system is being hideously compromised.
