FOUR generations of one family have gathered to celebrate a former Worcestershire archery champion's 100th birthday.

Marjorie Higgins, who reached her centenary on December 8, lived in Chaddesley Corbett for 50 years until she moved to Rashwood Nursing Home near Droitwich four years ago.

Ten of her 15 grandchildren, 10 of her 26 great-grandchildren and her two daughters turned up to mark the milestone at a party organised by the nursing home's staff.

Her daughter puts her longevity down to an active lifestyle - and the family's genes.

"She had a great aunt who was 104," explained Pam Howell, of Comberton Road, Kidderminster. "My sister and I look at each other and say 'have we really got another thirty years?' "

She added: "Marjorie was gardening until she was 90. I suppose that is what's kept her young."

As well as a gardener and a women's county archery champion in the 1960s, Mrs Higgins was a keen tennis player back in the 1920s.

"My mother had a vicious underarm service and she was a bit of a rebel for not wearing stockings!" said Mrs Howell.

The Chaddesley Corbett centenarian was also involved in the Women's Institute, and a cup in her name is presented for the best domestic stall at the village's annual flower show.
