WORCESTER City boss John Barton is poised to complete the signing of striker Adam Webster from Bedworth United before the weekend.

The two clubs have agreed a deal and Barton, who has met the player to discuss personal terms, said last night that he was hoping to wrap things up as quickly as possible.

Webster is currently sidelined with a back strain but starred against City in their 4-0 Dr Martens League Cup win and Barton has described him as an exciting prospect.

City's Dr Martens Premier Division clash at Hinckley United yesterday fell victim to the weather and was postponed an hour before the kick-off due to a frozen pitch.

Barton backed the referee's decision but will have also been relieved to have an extra few days to get his squad back to full fitness.

Leon Jackson is struggling with a knee ligament injury picked up in the 4-0 win against Newport Isle of Wight, while Allan Davies was due a fitness test on his hamstring.

"It was the right decision to call off the match," said Barton. "If there are any doubts when the pitches are in that sort of condition then it's best to call them off.

"Sometimes when they've been played we've benefited from the conditions at other times not but I'd always call them off because as a game there's nothing to look at and they're not a great spectacle. The referee was positive and made the right decision."

Worcester's next opponents are fourth-placed Weymouth on Saturday and after sharing a thrilling 3-3 draw at St George's Lane, Barton is well aware of the danger they pose.

"They are a decent side and it is a tough test for us," he said.

"We would have liked go have gone down there with a full-strength squad but it looks like once again that won't be possible."

Barton, who tipped the Dorset side to be among the challengers this year, will be urging his defenders to keep an eye on the league's leading scorer David Laws.

"Laws has scored a few goals and overtaken Mark Owen. They've got threats all over the pitch.

"They haven't disappointed me from the end of last season when I predicted they would be title challengers and it will be a tough task for us."
