OARSMEN from Royal Grammar School, Worcester, finished the rowing year on a high note with seven sets of medals, including gold, from ten events entered at the Wycliffe Small Boats Head.

RGS entered twenty boats, and took on crews from Radley, Shrewsbury, St Edward's Oxford and Bryanston as well as many local clubs.

A spate of illnesses put five key men out of action, but Worcester showed the strength in depth within the squad.

In novice quads, there was a fierce battle between the 'A' crew (Dan Bond, Adam Singh, Rob Simmons and Rob Trevett) and the 'B' crew (Richard Stratton, Chris Bowen, Chris Palmer and Doug Court). In the end, the 'B' beat the 'A' by four seconds to take silver and bronze medals respectively.

Court struck silver again in the second division, when he teamed up with Tom Meredith in the Senior 3 Double sculls.

There was another bronze in the J16 Quads, where the 'B' (James O'Driscoll, Alex Stone, James Rhodes and Bowen) beat the 'A' -- this time by nine seconds.

The RGS J15 boys continued their run of success with the one gold medal of the day, in the Quads event, where they were just eight seconds off the course record.

The crew (Nic Palmer, Andrew Stewart, Alex Stone and Mark Walker, coxed by Abhijit Mohite) pipped the fastest of three Shrewsbury crews by just two seconds.

There were also some fine performances in the single sculls where Colin Scott and Charles Fisher took bronzes.

Dan Bond set the fastest junior time and has been invited to a training camp in Switzerland in December for potential GB squad members.
