HAVING read George Cowley's letters for some while, and always dismissed them as being coded messages to a foreign spy network, I must take issue with the crass comment regarding Worcester City FC.

It's obvious that this reading of this newspaper extends no further than the letters page and the glorification at seeing yet again his name in print.

That is, except for the night that John Phillpott writes his column, when he no doubt prostrates himself in front of his idol.

Should his reading extend to the sports section, he will read the excellent coverage given most nights to Worcester City Football Club.

The amount of work that has taken place to ensure the survival of the club by many hard-working unpaid individuals appears to have escaped his attention. And with the appointment of John Barton in 1999 as manager, the club has seen a resurgence in fortunes.

This started last season with victory in the Southern League Cup, the first time since 1939 that the magnificent trophy has returned to St George's Lane.

This season has so far been rewarded with an appearance in the first round proper of the FA Cup after victory in three preliminary rounds.

So please, George, go back to your coded messages or come down the Lane one Saturday and then write about something you have knowledge about.

PAUL CURTIS,

Worcester.
