GRAFFITI is appearing in Worcester yet again, despite the launch of high-profile campaigns to combat the problem.

Ugly-looking scrawl is again blighting Cheshire Cheese Entry, near the Odeon cinema, which was cleaned up by volunteers and members of the Duckworth Trust back in May.

City councillor Derek Prodger had overseen an anti-graffiti strategy, with a whole week spent tackling the problem around city centre streets.

In the last battle to clean up the eyesore, the alleyway had to be closed for 10 days.

"Can't these vandals find anything better to do?" said Councillor Mike Layland. "People have had enough of these individuals. It's time they were made an example of.

"If they love painting so much, I know plenty of old folks whose living rooms need re-doing."

Last month, Coun Prodger lent his weight to a Government scheme to bring wardens in to patrol the streets.

"The alley smells like a urinal and the graffiti has returned, but the council will not be giving up on this issue," said Coun Prodger.

He is arranging to meet with police and building planners to discuss installing a CCTV camera and whether the alleyway could be closed at certain times.

The wardens, who start work next year, will have the power to fine offenders caught daubing graffiti.
