MPs Paul Keetch and Bill Wiggin have paid tribute to the bravery of the SAS on the 60th anniversary of its first operation.

Hereford MP Mr Keetch heads the list of MPs who have signed a Commons early day motion, which has also been backed by Leominster's Mr Wiggin.

The base of the crack squadron - currently in action in the war against terrorism in Afghanistan - was formerly in Mr Keetch's Hereford constituency. It has recently moved to Credenhill in Mr Wiggin's constituency.

Mr Keetch, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, said he wanted to congratulate the SAS on six decades of service to the country and pay tribute to its founder, David Stirling.

"The regiment was based for most of its history in Hereford and still retains the Freedom of the City," he said. "Many of its present and past members live in the city and county of Herefordshire and we're proud to continue this link.

"I'm glad that Parliament is marking the 60th anniversary of its first action".

The motion - signed by six MPs so far - gives appreciation for the regiment's "many acts of bravery in missions around the world, recognising that many lost their lives in the process".
