WORCESTER could become a beacon of excellence for environmental work after being shortlisted for a prestigious Government award.
The city council is one of 11 across Britain competing for the Beacon Council Scheme, a Government award which recognises best practice in a chosen field including crime reduction in rural areas, helping business growth and community legal services.
A team of assessors were due to arrive in Worcester today to determine whether the city, which opted for the category of improving green spaces, will make it through to the next stage.
During the day, assessors will visit various sites across the city, including the orchard restoration project at RNIB New College on Whittington Road, the green networks of Warndon Villages and the Lyppard Grange ponds.
Robert Moreland, head of policy and review at Worcester City Council, said he was delighted the city had been shortlisted.
Today's assessment is aimed at giving the council the opportunity to explain the key reasons for its application for the award.
