AN Evesham animal rights campaigner was arrested after barricading herself in at a research establishment.

Lynne Sawyer, who recently lost a court case in which she had accused a police officer of causing her grievous bodily harm, was taken to a Cambridgeshire police station following the incident at Huntingdon Life Sciences on Monday.

The 34-year-old midwife, of Boat Lane, was released on bail, pending further inquiries.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary press officer Nicky Phillipson said: "We were called at about 9am by a member of staff at Huntingdon Life Sciences and were told a woman had locked herself in an office, inside the main building.

"We sent officers to the scene to talk to her and, at about 11am, we arrested a woman, who is a 34-year-old lady from Worcestershire, on suspicion of burglary.

"There were no other protesters at the location. The lady was taken to Huntingdon Police Station, where she was questioned by detectives and released on bail."

Miss Sawyer is due to return to Huntingdon Police Station, in line with her bail arrangements, on December 5.

Miss Sawyer said: "I walked into Huntingdon Life Sciences and managed to get into one of the offices."

She went on: "I was there for a couple of hours," adding: "I was concerned for my safety so I just put a desk up against the door and they had to cut a wall down to get to me."

The protester is a member of the Huntingdon Animal Cruelty Group.

A spokesman for Huntingdon Life Sciences said: "We've got security guards but she managed to get through somehow.

"She got into an empty building and locked herself in an office. She should not have got on site and we will be looking at how we can tighten our security. We have to have people coming in and out. We have 800 people who work here."
