THE people of Alcester were spurred into action when it was revealed St Nicholas Church still needs thousands of pounds for vital repairs.

After a massive fund-raising push successfully raised £80,000 towards roof work and other projects, it was discovered there was a problem with the central heating system.

It no longer functioned effectively and pipes in the building had begun to leak.

On Saturday, October 13, a new wave of fund-raising began with a lively night of Rock'n'roll with The Rackets at the town hall which raised almost £500. The group, as always, performed free of charge.

The next event will be the Christmas bazaar in the town hall, which starts on Friday, November 16.

On that day there will be a wine tasting session sponsored by Victoria Wines, with music and mince pies. Admission costs £2.50 and starts at 7pm.

The following day there will be an art exhibition, tombola, stalls, coffee, mince pies and games. Admission is 50p and the fun starts at 10am.

On Tuesday, November 27, local historian John Bunting will give a talk in the town hall from 7.30pm.

"A New Look at Alcester" will feature previously unseen photographs and material. Tickets cost £5 and are available from the church book shop or from restoration committee spokesman Norman Barker on 01789 764756.

Mr Barker said: "In December, a sponsored carol concert is planned and in the New Year, a barn dance, a musical day in church and a duck race will take place.

"All these events depend on people's support and their contributions to the fund are greatly needed if we're to meet such a very large expenditure."

The fund currently stands at £4125.
