STAND-in striker Darren Middleton aims to continue his rich vein of goalscoring when Worcester City entertain Mangotsfield United in the first round of the FA Trophy tomorrow (3pm).

The Bristol side, who fell to a Mark Owen hat-trick at the same hurdle last year, will encounter another forward in prime form with Middleton readjusting to life up front.

Middleton has fired in four goals in three games since being moved to attack following Owen's broken leg in the FA Cup match at St Blazey and was on target again on Monday night with two more as City knocked out Belper Town.

Worcester's success in the FA Cup has whetted the players' appetites for further cup glory and a run in the FA Trophy is the next goal for City, according to Middleton.

"Both cup competitions are important and although the FA Cup is the highlight, the FA Trophy is the biggest competition in non-league football and we want to have a good run," he said.

"We've already played four ties in the FA Cup which has been very exciting and its whetted everybody's appetites for more.

"Monday night was such a good atmosphere that it felt as though there were actually more people in the ground and its shows the capability of this club."

Fears that City's goals would dry up with Owen's absence have proved groundless to date with 12 goals in four games, including a Phil Stant hat-trick.

Middleton is quick to praise his veteran striking partner Stant, the former Hereford United player, who has struck seven goals in 14 appearances for the Blue and Whites.

"He's very experienced but is always talking to you and keeping your confidence up," said Middleton.

"He works very hard and his hat-trick a few weeks ago was exceptional so there are always things you can pick up from him."

After earning a reputation as a scorer of spectacular goals Middleton has enjoyed striking a few simpler goals lately but is taking nothing for granted.

"I said a while back that I was hoping for a few tap ins and I'm just pleased to be getting on the scoresheet," he said. "I'm in a good run of form but this game can kick you in the teeth so you have to keep on working hard."
