THE Bromsgrove and Redditch Table Tennis Association started their league programme this week.

This is its 50th year since its foundation and it is hoped a reunion evening will be held at the end of the season, organised by Ron Butterton. Anyone who is interested or has any suggestions can contact him on (01527) 874347.

There are 17 teams in the association, eight in division one and nine in division two.

The league welcomes West Midlands Phones into the league, who are putting two teams in, one in each division, and are based at Stirchley.

Three teams have dropped out: Himbleton, Lickey Panthers and Hillcrest B.

Himbleton -- who had three teams a few years ago -- will be sadly missed, as will their captain Alan Throssell who organised everything.

Lickey Panthers -- who have been in the league for many years with captain David Appleton -- are another loss to the league.

In division one this week the two games played both ended in 6-4 wins for the home team. Newton Works A beat Astwood Bank thanks mainly to number one Geoff Cooper, who won all his three games. Michael Kendall won two and veteran skipper Ron Butterton got the other one. For the Bank N Anson won two, Ken Southwell won one, plus the double for their four.

In the other game, Droitwich A beat SPSP. Steve Nicholls, playing for them for the first time, was in great form, winning all three games. But they only got one more win through Lester Winterbourne. For Droit-wich, Trevor Simmons and Tony Birch won two each. Don Evans won one. Simmons and Birch also won the doubles.

In division two Droitwich C beat Newton Works C 6-4. For Droitwich, Michael Langston, Nick Walters and Alan Davey all won two games. Newton's best was Steve Dimbylow who won all his games and teamed up with Avril Belcher to win the doubles.

Studley Road Terriers won 7-3 away to Droitwich C. John Dignum, Steve Hartles and Steve Gascoine all had two wins for Studley Road, plus the doubles. Simon Tibke was undefeated for Droitwich.

Studley Road Nomads came up against a strong Hillcrest team and went down 8-2 at home. Bernie Leech got Studley Road's two wins. For Hillcrest, Graeme Farrell won his three games and was backed up well by Alan McLoughlin and Terry Pountney, who both won two.

Newcomers to the league West Midland Phones B had an easy 10-0 win over Barnt Green Hornets.
