ALMOST two years of consultations lie ahead as council tenants in Bromsgrove wait on a decision which will decide the future of their homes.

Tenants representatives were warned they will have to wait a minimum of eighteen months before a final decision is made on whether Bromsgrove District Council will continue to own and manage its housing stock.

A housing options appraisal carried out in May 2000 revealed it may be in the best interest of tenants for stock to be transferred, as council funds would be under increased pressure should it continue to own and manage them.

It is claimed this would result in increased rent in order to maintain current standards of maintenance and repair.

Representatives expressed concerns for the future of Bromsgrove's council housing at a tenants' consultative forum held at the Council House, in Burcot Lane, on Thursday October 11.

By November 9 councillors are required to confirm an "expression of interest" in the transfer scheme.

Co-opted member of the forum, Dennis Stewart, from King George Close, Sidemoor, was anxious tenants should be considered at every stage of the consultation

Chairman Cllr Anne Doyle (Con, Barnt Green) recommended representatives consult with tenants from other authorities that have already transferred housing stock to independent companies.

She added this was only the first step and tenants would be able to take advantage of "long, on-going consultations" before a decision is made.
