RICKY Brooks thought he had hit the jackpot when he wrenched two Lottery Instants dispensers off a petrol station counter.

But the teenager's luck ran out when the cashier heard the commotion and quickly locked him in the shop.

Magistrates heard 19-year-old Brooks walked into the Texaco garage on Worcester Road, Droitwich, on Wednesday, September 19.

At 9.45pm, he bought some matches. But as soon as the cashier's back was turned, he grabbed the dispensers, which were bolted on to the counter.

"She heard a loud snapping sound and spun round to see the defendant running away from the counter ," said Kiernan Cunningham, prosecuting.

"Quickly, she pushed a switch behind the counter which locked the door, trapping him in there."

The woman shouted for the manager to come into the shop and called the police.

But Brooks panicked and ran through a door into Paul Newbury Ltd next door.

He dumped the boxes, grabbed a fire extinguisher and smashed a window with it before jumping out and running off.

Brooks dived into a van, but a passer-by who had watched his escape jotted down the registration number and passed it to police who turned up minutes later.

Brooks admitted attempted theft and breaking the £250 window, either intentionally or recklessly as to what damage would be caused.

"I did it for the money," said Brooks, of Nailors Close, Bromsgrove, defending himself.

Droitwich magistrates adjourned the case until Thursday, November 15 for a pre-sentence report.
