KIDDERMINSTER Harriers supremo Lionel Newton has insisted he only had the club's welfare at heart when he voted against a two-up two-down system between Division Three and the Conference.
Newton, who originally intended to back the proposal, was among 71 chairmen to close the door on increased promotion from non-league - and just one voted for.
But he revealed cash was the issue with League clubs worried about the big loss of television revenue and the unsatisfactory two-year parachute payment compensation package offered.
He pointed to the financial struggle suffered by other clubs that had been relegated.
However, Newton added he was still behind the idea in principle.
