UPTON ladies hockey club played their first 'home' game of the season at MGC on Saturday against local rivals Malvern.

Despite Malvern lending Upton a player, Nicky, Upton were still a player short.

UPTON 3, MALVERN 1

However Upton took the initiative, following some nice flowing hockey Vikki Atkinson drove into the D and scored to put Upton ahead. Malvern despite playing some good hockey were unable to make any impression on the Upton defence, Sarah Loader having her first game for several seasons, putting in some telling tackles.

With Charlotte Underwood and Laura Smith having space to run the midfield Upton soon put Malvern under pressure with Rachel Barber following up a shot by Vikki Atkinson to put Upton two up at half time.

Malvern started the second half determined to strike back, some good defensive work by Nicky, and Jacky Farley keeping Malvern at bay with keeper Jenny Parkes having little to do.

Tania Philips having plenty of space to run down the right wing, aided by Trudy Warner at right midfield, able to put in some good crosses.

Following a quickly taken free hit Malvern pulled a goal back but Vikki Atkinson then scored her second to make the final score 3-1 to Upton.

Many thanks to Clive Fletcher for umpiring the match on his own.
