MALVERN Town quickly followed up on their midweek Express & Star Premier Division success at Westfields with an emphatic victory over a poor Gornal side at the Langland Stadium on Saturday.

MALVERN TOWN 4, GORNAL ATHLETIC 0

Dominating from the first whistle Town were virtually camped out in the visitors box during the opening five minutes and it was no surprise when they took the lead through Sean Cotterill.

A Robbie Gore corner was only half cleared and as the ball fell to Keith Holmans, the Town midfielder threaded a superb ball through to Cotterill who expertly turned his marker to fire Town in front.

Although Town continued to pile on the pressure, they failed to add to their score and began to concede a little ground to the visitors and become generally wasteful in possession as the half drew to a close.

The second period could not have started better for Malvern though. Young striker Lee Hooper picked the ball up on the edge of the Gornal box and as the visitors defence backed off, Hooper exploited the space to score a fine individual goal.

Town were now back in the ascendancy and on the hour mark Chris Thomas broke down the left, before cutting inside and squaring the ball to Hooper.

Hooper held the ball up superbly before laying it into the path of Gore who drove the ball home from the edge of the box to register his sixth goal of the season.

Another goal was inevitable and came after 75 minutes when Thomas, whose pace troubled the Gornal defence all afternoon, outstripped them once again and with only the keeper to beat produced an excellent finish to secure Town's fourth and final goal.

Town assistant manager Richard Anson said: "We were pleased with the result, particularly as we were missing four key players.

"To be fair Gornal will not be the best team we play all season, but you still have to be professional and complete the task, which we did with a bit to spare. It was also good to keep the momentum going after our win at Westfields and if we can win in the Vase tomorrow (Saturday) we will have got our season going at last."

Malvern Town: Alden, Dugdale, Walker, Cotterill, Damore, Westmacott (Higgins), Ward (Brooks), Holmans, Thomas, Gore, Hooper (Hancocks).
