RORY McLeod has certainly led an interesting life.

Not everyone that can claim to have played in a Texas reggae band, been a fire breather for a Mexican circus and travelled through five continents over 12 years.

However, Rory has done all that and more, and arrives in Worcester this month to play his own brand of world music, inspired by his experiences.

Born in London and now based on the Scottish borders, his musical career began in Mexico, where he worked with a circus as a musical man and firebreather, busking and farming in his spare time to earn more money. From there he moved up to Austin Texas, where he played with a reggae band.

"I've always been a song maker," he said. "The stories that I sing are travelling songs."

As well as America, Rory has spent time living on a London housing estate, and spent five months in Australia. He counts China as one of the most interesting places he has visited.

"China was fascinating, really culturally interesting. The resourcefulness of the people amazes me," he said. "Cuba too, they never waste anything and they're always learning from their own mistakes. In Cuba they have an amazing medical system, almost too good.

"They have more doctors there than farmers in the fields."

Despite the huge range of cultures that Rory has been a part of, he says that wherever he goes there are always things that remain the same.

"You realise what we have in common wherever I go," he said. "Like music, it's definitely a language. It brings people together, there's an energy that comes from music, also cooking, everyone needs to eat. It's such a basic human thing."

As well as the international influences on his music, the arrival of his son, Solly, who is now 18 months old, has quietened him down a lot.

"I've been singing a lot more lullabies and softer singing," he said. "It also makes you feel connected with other people."

Rory plays at Huntingdon Hall on Saturday, September 22 at 8pm. Tickets are £8.50 and are available from the venue's box office on 01905 611427.
