FOR their final game of the season Newland entertained Abberley and skipper C Genever had no hesitation in electing to bat on a wicket full of runs and for once all the batsmen were in the runs.

NEWLAND v ABBERLEY

D Tolley (46) and S Freeman (29) put on 81 for the first wicket. D Cook (38) and D White (30) also chipped in with useful knocks but once again skipper Genever top scored with 58no.

So ended a remarkable season where he scored 1,124 runs for an average of 112.4, truly a case of leading from the front.

Chasing 231 to win would normally be a daunting task but with the wicket giving no help to the bowlers at all, Abberley, despite losing two early wickets, soon started to take the bowling apart aided by some sloppy fielding.

D Cook (65) and I Lythall (91no) put them firmly in the driving seat and they won the game with seven overs to spare.

So ended a season which was enjoyed by all, thanks to Genever's leadership in that he always tried to involve everyone, especially the younger players.
