ELEVEN wells, spouts and troughs were visited by judges last weekend in the Malvern's annual well-dressing competition.

The theme for the event, organised by the Malvern Spa Association, was purity.

Winners of the open section for the second year running were the Friends of Everdine Spring, for their work decorating Evendine Spring, at the junction of Evendine Lane and Jubilee Drive. They were presented with a Victorian silver cup. Runners-up, again for the second year running, were the Bowker and Bradbeer families, who decorated Holy Well. They won a silver trophy and a book of paintings donated by local artist David Prentice.

Winners of the WI section were Barnards Green WI, for Barnards Green trough on the corner of Hall Green and Guarlford Road. They were presented with the WI Shield.

All three winners received a certificate and bottle of champagne donated by Waitrose.

Cora Weaver, for Malvern Spa Association, said: "Entries was slightly down on the record number last year but the competition went very well and the standard was very high."

Signed copies of the third, improved edition of The Springs, Spouts, Fountains and Holy Wells of the Malverns, by Cora Weaver and Bruce Osbourne, will be on sale for first time at the charity fair at the Malvern Theatres on November 3.
