MALVERN Civic Society is calling for action to save the flowers on the Barnards Green roundabout.

The society is asking for a partnership be formed to ensure the continuance of annual flower displays, following the council's move to plant low-maintenance shrubs.

Society chairman Katharine Barber said: "While we understand that financial concerns may be driving the decision to stop this type of planting, we wonder if it might be possible to form a partnership with, say, the town council, Malvern Hills Conservators and the district council, to continue to beautify this area of Malvern.

"Flower displays play an important part in attracting tourists to the town."

The society has also requested a development brief be carried out to research the planning options for North Site on Leigh Sinton Road, due to be vacated by the Ministry of Defence next year and released for development.

Mrs Barber said: "The future development of this site will have considerable impact on the surrounding area, whether it's for industrial, commercial, housing or mixed use. It will impact on the transport, school, medical, retail and sewerage aspects."

She said that on the grounds of increased traffic on Worcester Road, the society was continuing to object to plans from Lidl to build a supermarket within the Malvern Link Conservation Area.

"This is an opportunity for housing, suitable to a Conservation Area, to be erected on this site, which would also increase the catchment area for the surrounding retail premises, whilst not adding greatly to the amount of traffic on Worcester Road."
