A ROAD accident involving an 11-year-old boy has renewed calls for traffic calming measures on Somers Park Avenue, in Malvern.

The child was in collision with a green Metro at 8.35am yesterday (Thursday) and was taken to the Accident and Emergency department at Ronkswood, Worcester, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Concerned resident Lee Harrison described the road as an accident black spot and called for action.

"The district council has had long enough to do something about it," he said. "How long will it take before someone does get killed?

"I've got an eight-year-old daughter who walks up to Northleigh School and the roads they have to cross are dangerous enough.

"We're all very worried about their safety. You see children skateboarding down that road and people drive down it at 50 or 60 miles an hour," he continued.

"You get motorbikes seeing how fast they can go before they get to the roundabout and then seeing how quickly they can stop."

John Claridge, senior project engineer at Worcestershire County Council, said Somers Park Avenue would have traffic calming measures introduced in the early part of next year.

"It's part of the Safer Routes to Schools project," he explained.

"We will be contacting people in the area to get their views on the best measures to introduce next month and construction should be under way by next April."
