SALFORD Priors Parish Council is looking for people to help with the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations next year.

An initial meeting on August 28 attracted 20 people willing to help co-ordinate festivities, and it is now hoped that even more will turn up the village's Memorial Hall, next Wednesday, to iron out a plan of action.

Eric Mitchell, parish clerk, said it was planned for the celebrations to begin on May 31, running through to June 2 with a 'party in the park' theme, as it would be held on the playing fields and tie in with the fete.

"We hope to start things off with a children's disco on the Friday night in a marquee as the curtain raiser," he said.

The fete will follow on the Saturday afternoon with a brass band concert planned for the evening.

On Sunday, a sports day is planned, which may incorporate a cricket match.

Celebrations are hoped to culminate in the early evening with a songs of praise-style event, which could be in the marquee if weather conditions are not favourable.

Mr Mitchell said: "Some of us are now doing rough costings and provisional bookings.

"An outline plan will then be drawn up which will be honed and tuned to make it work."

The meeting starts at 8pm.
