THE Evening News (September 12) reported how a drunken row ended in the arrest of a 19-year-old woman.
The magistrates decided that (although she had previous convictions), the quality of mercy should apply and fined her £50 with £40 court costs.
The young lady was said to be "currently unemployed". Could she perhaps have private means and is making no financial demands on the state?
Or, as in so many cases coming out of the courts, is the long-suffering taxpayer actually paying the £50 fine (and £40 court costs?)
