IF Bob Webb had a nickname at his golf club it ought to be ace because the 60-year-old has struck 14 hole-in-ones in 30 years of playing the game.

That's nearly one every two years which is a staggering feat especially when many people play a lifetime without ever hitting that most magical of golf shots - the hole-in-one.

The Worcester Golf and Country Club member grabbed his 14th during a recent Captain's Day at Boughton Park.

He has even had aces in consecutive weekends at the par three sixth but his fondest memory is an ace he had when playing in a fourball competition.

"One of my opponents was Russell Cogger and we reached the old par three 16th which was about 165 yards long," he recollects.

"Russell had just had three birdies on the trot and we were all square.

"He hit a cracking shot and put it four feet from the pin and turned to me and said 'let's see you get inside that then you so and so'.

"I said 'well it looks like I'll have to hole it then' and I got out a six iron.

"I struck the ball which bounced once and went straight in the hole. I won't tell you what Russell called me but to make matters worse he actually missed his birdie putt."

Bob has no secret to his success although he is a good golfer who plays off six (having once been as low as three) but admits that sometimes his aces do have an element of good fortune.

"There is a certain amount of luck because I've had one that bounced off a bunker and went straight in the hole but I've also had others from good shots," he said.
