A HALF-TIME roasting from coach Ron Hobbs fired Stourport up as they eventually romped to a 38-7 Intermediate Cup first round win over Bromyard.

They now look forward to the first home game of the season when Kings Norton visit on Saturday (3pm).

It marks the club's sponsor day and their maiden fixture in Midlands Four West (South).

But Hobbs' fierce half-time lecture was their secret to success on Saturday.

He said: "We came in at half time 14 - 0 up after tries by Richard Dorrell and Toby Lee (both converted by Dorrell).

"But we were only going through the motions and I knew that Bromyard would come back at us."

Stourport had dominated from the off and the strong pack had control of matters in the early exchanges resulting in Dorrell's try after only eight minutes.

But Stourport have not done well in cup competitions over the last few seasons.

Forward Melvin Bourne said: "We've been promoted the last three years but it's always been a sense of annoyance to us that we've never done that well in the cup.

"Hopefully, this is a good omen for us and we can do ourselves justice this season."

After the half time dressing-down, Stourport were obviously shell-shocked as a silly converted try was scored by Bromyard making the score 14-7.

But Stourport took the game by the scruff of the neck, adding tries by John Mallin, Victor Little, Lee Philips and a second for man of the match Lee. Two were converted.

Fixtures, Saturday: Stourport v Kings Norton, 1sts home, 2nds away, 3rds home.
