WINSTON Stanley is desperate to prove he made the right move by beating the club he turned down in the summer.

The flying winger, who has become an instant hit with Worcester supporters since his move from Leicester Tigers, lines up against Rotherham at Sixways in the National One title showdown.

And Canada's record try scorer has more reasons than most to want victory as the two professional clubs in the league lock horns for the first time this season.

"It's a big game for me," said Stanley. "I had the chance to join them in the summer but Worcester for me were the outstanding option. I had already agreed at the time to come to Sixways when they made an inquiry. Rotherham really wanted me but it would not have been right to go back on my original decision to come to Worcester. I'm happy here, it's been a good start for me so far but Saturday is a big one."

Not only does the 27-year-old know that the weekend winners will have a massive advantage in the season ahead, Stanley is well aware there are familiar faces ready to rub it in should Rotherham come away from Sixways with the points.

Rotherham have three of Stanley's Canadian team-mates among their ranks with John Cannon, Harry Teows and skipper Mike Schmid.

"I went to university with Mike. He is the one I know best out of the three but victory on Saturday will make it easier for me to call them up in the future! We are not close but when we are back in Canada we certainly call each other up from time to time and have a barbecue."

After a one hundred per cent start for both clubs, it is Rotherham who lead the table by one point after Worcester's failure to secure the bonus point at Henley on Saturday. And Stanley believes the clash between the two top sides will show just where Worcester are in their development this season.

"This game will reveal a lot of character in our side. It is the first real test of the squad from another team that are on our level. I don't mean that to sound conceited with respect to the sides we have played so far but I just feel we haven't been pushed this season. Rotherham will be a good benchmark to see exactly where we are."

Despite the Yorkshire side's tough baptism in the Zurich Premiership last season, Stanley saw at first hand just what a threat they will pose for Worcester at the weekend.

"I thought they were very impressive. Some of the results really could have gone either way if their goal-kicker had been on song. They didn't try many flash things but their ball retention was always good and you will find that it took sides, in a number of games, a long time to break them down."

Stanley and the in-form Chris Garrard could be the key in a game with few chances for the backs to shine and the former Tiger is already full of praise for his fellow winger.

"If I look across at the other wing, I can see a good start to the season! He has done fantastically well but he'll be the first to admit, we are there to finish off good team play.

"It's just a pleasure to play with so many quality players. As a winger, you rely on the team to set you up and with Craig Chalmers, Ben Clarke, Chris Yates and Ben Hinshelwood around you, it's a pleasure - they make you look good.

"It's funny, but last time I played at this level with Blackheath, we would come into big games with say Bedford and Rotherham and they would really be on top of their game while we would be scrambling around. Now it's nice to be on the side who are on top of things."
