PLANS are afoot to build a new clubhouse at Stourport Rugby Club and businesses and individuals in the town are being urged to join the mission.

After two successive promotions the club is preparing for its first season in Midlands Division Four West (South), but officials are keen to ensure it keeps pace with its success and provides for the wider community.

And it has come up with a five-year plan to build a new clubhouse including changing rooms at the Walshes Meadow home it shares with Stourport Cricket Club.

The bid to fund the project, which would see the facilities available for private parties and functions, begins on Saturday when the club holds its annual sponsors day at its opening home league game against Kings Norton.

Publicity officer Andy Holmes said: "This is a great family club and there's a special connection as we share the clubhouse with Stourport Cricket Club.

"However, the facilities are not great and many of the players don't think of it as a place where they can take their partners and children. We want to upgrade the bar and changing rooms in particular."

He added: "We don't know how much this will all cost yet, it's a case of seeing how things progress.

"But we need to push things on now and begin making more money. We have toured Prague, Dublin, Cardiff and Malaga in recent years and we're planning a trip to Estonia this season.

"The sponsors dinner will provide opportunities for firms and individuals to sponsor items ranging from the playing kit to advertising boards and down to car stickers."
