NEWS that an historic Stourport pub which closed last month has been acquired by British Waterways has been welcomed by Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Society.

Regarded as the town's finest Georgian building, the Tontine, Severn Side, was sold by owner Banks' Brewery to a developer earlier this year who was set to convert it into flats.

Writing in the latest issue of the society's newsletter, Broadsheet, canal society chairman Chris Dyche says: "I understand it is British Waterways' intention to establish it as a good quality pub, restaurant and hotel.

"This is excellent news. It will ensure this fine building a future, which will not only complement the whole Stourport canal scene but also retain continuity of use for a building of great importance to our waterways heritage."

He added the news was of special interest to the society which had taken a leading role, many years ago, in the battle to save the 18th century Grade II listed building.

A spokeswoman for British Waterways confirmed the building had been acquired by them but said she was unable to give details as yet of its proposed future use.
