ELDERLY folk have been urged to join in the fun and enjoy the expanding range of activities at a Stourport club.

Stourport Social Day Centre is holding an open day next month in a bid to attract new members and volunteers to help organise and run the range of sessions available. Olive Lovatt, Edna Cunneen, Shirley Davies and Joan Davies enjoy a game of cards at the centre.

The New Street venue, which has been running since 1970, is keen to raise its profile and spread the welcome message to senior citizens during the open day on Saturday, October 6.

Management secretary Margaret Cook said: "If people are spending long hours at home on their own we want them to come along and meet new friends and have their lunch cooked for them.

"If transport is a problem then they also have the option of Wyre Forest Dial-a-Ride for just a small fee."

Morning tea and lunch are followed by afternoon events at the centre including talks, demonstrations, indoor bowling and games including cards, scrabble and bridge.

And almost every evening the centre is taken over by different town organisations including floral art and horticultural groups.

A recruitment drive is also underway to attract more volunteers to the centre said Mrs Cook.

"People who can spare one or two hours a month, mornings or afternoons, will be a great help to us," she said.

"These people serve refreshments each morning, wait on tables for lunches on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and in the afternoon help organise the activities."
