OUTRAGED folk vented their anger at the decision to shut popular public toilets in Stourport as demolition work got underway.

Stourport mayor Michael Grinnall, a district councillor for the town's Mitton ward, carried a placard bearing the message "Shame on Wyre Forest District Council", in reference to its move to close the Bridge Street toilets. Stourport mayor Michael Grinnall leads the protest against the toilet closure.

Mr Grinnall, who was joined in the peaceful protest by others including deputy mayor Don Giles, county and town councillor Carol Warren and town councillors Vi Higgs, Fred Raybould and Terry Higgins, said people could still not believe the move to replace the toilets with a superloo in Raven Street.

He said: "We didn't expect to change any of the decisions which have already been made as a result of our demonstration.

"However, we felt the voices of Stourport people needed to be heard to let them know how strongly we feel about and how hard we have fought this.

"There were about 15 people who took part and lots of car drivers came past tooting their horns to show their disapproval."

Mrs Higgs said: "I haven't spoken to a single person who approves of the closure which, as Stourport Carnival this month proved, will leave this tourist town struggling hopelessly to provide adequate toilet provision at major events."

Earlier this month the council's newly formed executive committee rubber-stamped the closure, which members said would save the authority thousands of pounds and prevent vandalism and anti-social behaviour outside the Bridge Street toilets.
