SEVERE staff shortages and excessive sickness levels have led to several popular bus routes being axed around Redditch.
First Midland Red bosses announced the 61, 62, 177, 178 and 179 services were to be dropped at the start of October.
The news has angered many customers who regularly use the routes to get to and from the town centre.
Mr Birks said it was hoped other bus companies would take on the services which have had to be stopped.
And he said any Redditicket holders who used the routes would be refunded.
Bus user Lynda Morrison said: "The axing of the 61/62 service will mean a 25-minute walk to and from Winyates at the start and end of the day.
"I live in Winyates Green, which is quite a large estate and as such, I believe a bus service should be provided.
"There are a lot of elderly people who don't own cars and who will be virtually imprisoned by this action."
She added: "I'll be contacting my councillors to see what they can do about the situation."
