NATHAN Crewe and co-driver Chris Clifford secured a good result in the third round of the raceandrally.com 1400 Championship -- the Woodpecker rally.

The Bromsgrove duo finally achieved second in class and sixth overall in the Cottrill Transport-prepared Escort at the two-day event, which had been packed into one day due to foot and mouth restrictions.

The morning stages were slippy due to the dry marble-like stones that lay on top of the surface, because of the warm, dry weather.

Crewe found it difficult to commit to the corners on these stages, which saw many competitors leave the road.

At the service halt some alterations were made to the Nailers Arms Restaurant-backed car and the pair began clawing back time lost in the morning.

Finally achieving second in class and sixth overall, the result means Nathan and Chris lead the Welsh National 1400 Championship, the National raceandrally.com 1400 open class and are fourth in the Formula First.

Crewe and Clifford's next challenge is the Malcolm Wilson rally in Cockermouth, Cumbria, on October 6.
