SICK Bromsgrove youngsters who are patients at Redditch's Alexandra Hospital now have got a new much-needed outdoor play area, thanks to the League of Friends.

The hospital's playground had been closed for safety reasons for the past four years.

The idea to refurbish it was originally inspired by the parents of a young boy who was being treated on Kingfisher Children's Ward.

Staff first appr-oached the League back in August 1999 to ask if they could use donations as a starting point to fund the scheme.

That same month a sub-committee was formed to organise a major appeal for £35,000.

Donations came from Bromsgrove and Redditch people.

The hospital's summer fete and Christmas fair raised a major amount.

Gill Griffin, for the League, said: "We hope this facility will bring many years of fun and therapy future patients on Kingfisher Ward.

"We cannot thank enough the hundreds of people who have helped to raise the money for the project."
