Rating: Four star
American Hi-fi burst on to the charts with the superb Flavor of the Weak and although the rest of the accompanying untitled album fails to live up to the single, it is still worth a purchase.
The 15 tracks have a samey quality but that is guessable from the headline single, which promises a collection of rock tracks which will be perfect fodder for teen movie soundtracks.
After the first three offerings, it becomes obvious there is little variation on the crashing guitars and whiny lyrics.
It will be dismissed as another release from the disaffected goatee-sporting middle class American youth, but is a damn good listen.
There is no problem with samey music as long as the samey is good and in this case it is.
It is the sort of album which will improve with each listening and will see American Hi-Fi follow in the footsteps of Third Eye Blind and Blink 182 - if that's not damning them with faint praise.
Worth buying if only for the excellent Flavor of the Weak, so reminiscent of The Knack's My Sharona, listen out for it on the next John Hughes offering at the cinema.
