COMMUNITY-SPIRITED residents are being urged to help fight crime.

Police need more special constables to patrol the streets of Droitwich Spa.

The voluntary bobbies already carry out 90,000 hours of duty in West Mercia but increasing demand means more are needed.

A police spokesman said: "Specials are often perceived as hobby bobbies but the contribution they make plays a vital part in our ability to meet the increasing demands placed on the police service today.

"The type of work you do from nine to five is not relevant to how you perform as a special constable, it's more about the kind of person you are.

"A mature, sensible attitude combined with a commitment to serving the community is needed."

There is no height requirement to join this voluntary sector of the force.

Recruits must be aged between 18-and-a-half and 55, of good character and a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen.

Members of certain professions, including the armed forces, fire service and private security, cannot apply.

Volunteers receive training and must give four hours of their time each week.

A uniform is provided and expenses are given.

To find out more, you can attend an open evening at Worcester division headquarters, in Castle Street, Worcester, on Tuesday October 2.
