THE former housekeeper and head gardener of Witley Court will be "returning" to the ruined historic mansion this weekend to offer visitors an insight into life below stairs during the estate's Victorian heyday.

Mrs Crabbe and Mr Westland, who both served the owner. The Earl of Dudley in the 1890s, will be portrayed by interpretative historians, Fairfax Historical Associations.

The formidable pair, who between them would have been responsible for as many as 150 staff, will chat to visitors about what it took to maintain the smooth running of the vast house and gardens which regularly welcomed guests including the future Edward VII.

The talks will take place on Saturday and Sunday and further information is available from Witley Court on 01299 896636.

Any readers who know the first names of the two members of staff, which have been lost, are invited to contact English Heritage.
