BRAILLE lessons, craft and cookery demonstrations were on show when dignitaries attended the opening of a new resource centre for the blind and partially-sighted.

Mayors from Kidderminster, Malvern and Stourport-upon-Severn joined scores of other visitors for the official opening of the Bradbury Centre in Sansome Place, Worcester.

"People got to see members of the centre participating in Braille lessons, craft and cookery," said Joyce Carnie, association fundraiser.

Peter White, disability correspondent for the BBC, made an appearance at the launch on Friday.

The Bradbury Centre is the headquarters of the Worcestershire Association for the Blind, an independent charity formed more than 60 years ago to cater for the specialist needs of the 10,000 blind and visually impaired people in Worcestershire.

The fund-raising for the building took five years and the total amount raised was £1.2m.

"We attached bells to the ribbon so every body who was blind and visually impaired knew the ribbon was being cut by Mr White," said Ms Carnie.
