A HUSH fell over the town at 11am on Friday - disrupted only by the car and bus drivers who ignored the three-minute silence in memory of those killed in the American tragedy.

Droitwich and Crowle members of the Royal British Legion organised a service, complete with flags and music, at the war memorial, in Victoria Square.

Around 150 people gathered to pay their respects and shed a tear.

Many shopkeepers observed the silence and the normally bustling Salters Shopping Centre came to a standstill.

Droitwich Spa town councillor John Cook (Con, Droit.West) was appalled by the number of motorists who did not observe the silence - including two First Midland Red bus drivers.

He said: "It is not the first time this has happened.

"People in America have lost their lives - can't people give just three minutes of their time to remember victims?

"People must have known about the silence."

First Midland Red spokesman Austin Birks said: "Staff with off-road duties observed the silence.

"But we took the view that the potential disruption caused by drivers stopping for three minutes would have a detrimental impact on the service for passengers. We did our best."
