CAMPAIGNERS have launched a scathing attack on a leading town councillor.

The Action for Droitwich (AFD) group has accused Droitwich Spa Town Council leader Cllr Pam Davey (Con, Droit.South) of trying to "bounce" the planning committee into supporting proposals for a housing development, off Kidderminster Road.

AFD wants a supermarket instead.

Protesters claim Cllr Davey should not have encouraged councillors to welcome plans for the 127 homes at a meeting this month because the application wasn't on the agenda and drawings of amendments were not available.

The accusations were made in an AFD report circulated with the agenda for Monday night's council planning committee meeting.

It also said: "AFD considers Cllr Davey's position untenable."

Cllr Davey described the claims as wholly inaccurate and called for an apology.

She said the application was discussed without plans because "strenuous" efforts to gain the necessary documentation had failed and she wanted to avoid delaying the planning process.

Wychavon District Council has already approved the scheme in principle but called for minor changes.

Amended drawings were available at the town council meeting on Monday but AFD wanted the application deferred until the full council meeting in October.

Labour leader Cllr Peter Pinfield (Lab, Droit.West) gave his support.

He said: "We must be brave enough to hold a full public debate - we shouldn't bamboozle it through.

"The whole thing stinks. It's time to stand back and listen to the facts and the people."

Committee chairman Cllr Don Lawley (Con, Droit.South) said: "We have been told to consider the amendments, not the principle of the development."

The council supported the amended plans by six votes to two.
