TALENTED members of a weavers and spinners guild will be working their magic into a giant tapestry thanks to a cash injection from The Foundation for Sport and the Arts.

Worcestershire Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers has been granted a cash injection of £2,500 to help it purchase materials to weave a commemorative tapestry.

The members of the Worcestershire Guild are currently weaving the colourful work of art in aid of the Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers' 50th anniversary next year.

When the tapestry is completed the weavers' hard work will be on public display for all to see, when it is hung on the walls of the new Worcester Hospital, on Newtown Road.

"The hospital is a community project and we thought we'd do something to benefit the whole community by donating the tapestry, "said Beryl Ward, chairman of the Worcestershire Guild.

The Foundation for Sports and the Arts is funded by Littlewoods and Vernons Pools.

It uses its revenue for the benefit of the sports and arts, both amateur and professional.

The new cash boost means that the Worcestershire Guild will be able to purchase all the dyes and yarns needed for the project, as well as equipment for dying the yarns.

"We've now got a lot of the yarn dyed and have started the weaving process," said Mrs Beryl Ward, from Great Comberton, near Pershore.

"The tapestry will be of flowers in the meadow and there will be 119 different colours all together."

The tapestry will take another 12 months before it is finished, and should be around 30ft wide to 6ft high.
